History of Garland The story of Garland began in 1951 when Herman Otto, a German-born American businessman, built a nine-hole golf course in Lewiston, Michigan for the enjoyment of family, friends, and employees of the Detroit-based company, Garland Manufacturing. Garland was opened to the public in the early 1960s and began to grow under the guidance of Herman’s son, Ron Otto. He designed the second nine holes which opened in 1973 and the third and fourth nine-hole layouts that opened in 1978 and 1980. Following a gas explosion that destroyed the club house in 1985, Ron and Joan Otto made the decision and commitment to create the ultimate four-season recreational and corporate retreat and began construction of the main lodge which opened in 1987. The 34,500 sq. ft. lodge is constructed of 15-inch spruce and lodgepole pine from British Columbia and if laid end-to-end would measure 3.2 miles. The four fireplaces, including two stretching 34 feet tall, required 8,600 sq. ft. of split fieldstone totaling over 510,000 pounds.
