Where will the sun be at four o'clock on a Tuesday in March? Which way will the shadows fall, and how long? When does the golden hour actually start where you're standing? Gnomon answers all three, for any place and any date, on a dial you can read at a glance. THE DIAL You stand at the centre. The rim is the horizon, the middle is straight up, and the sun's path for the day is drawn as an arc across it. A shadow ray shows which way shadows fall and how far. Scrub the timeline to watch the whole day move. The June and December tracks are drawn faintly behind the day’s own, so you can see at a glance how far the sun moves across the year, and where today sits between them. THE NUMBERS Bearing, elevation and shadow length, updating as you scrub. Blue hour, golden hour, sunrise, solar noon, sunset — tap any of them to jump straight there. Daylight length, the sun's height at noon, and the shortest shadow of the day. YOUR REAL HORIZON A sunrise from a valley floor is not the sunrise in the tables. Draw the hills and buildings around you by dragging across a chart, with the sun's own track plotted behind it, and Gnomon works out when the sun actually clears your skyline. Hills to the east delay sunrise and leave sunset untouched — as they should. If a peak splits the day, you're told about the hours in between rather than having them quietly averaged away. THROUGH THE CAMERA Hold the phone up and see the sun's track laid over the live view, so you can tell before you commit whether the light will reach where you want it. THE MOON Phase, illumination and age, the next full and new moons, and moonrise and moonset where you are. The moon is drawn on the dial too, at its real phase, and only while it's actually up. ON YOUR HOME AND LOCK SCREEN A widget for any of your saved places, or one that simply follows whatever the app is showing. Small and medium sizes carry the dial, the next few events and the sun's current height. On the lock screen: a circular dial, a single line beside the clock, or a wider one under it with the place, the next event and the elevation together. ON YOUR WRIST A Watch app and complications — circular, corner, inline and rectangular — showing the dial, the sun's height, the shadow ratio and what happens next. The watch finds its own location, so it answers what the light is doing where you are, not at a place you pinned on your phone. BUILT ON THE REAL MATHS Positions come from the NOAA Solar Calculator and Meeus's Astronomical Algorithms, computed on your device. Sunrise and sunset are checked against published almanac times for London, New York and Sydney. Polar day and polar night are handled honestly — inside the Arctic Circle the app tells you the sun doesn't rise, rather than inventing a time.
