O Geoparque Litoral de Viana do Castelo foi criado em 2017, depois de mais de uma década de trabalho de inventariação do património geológico do concelho, o qual resultou na identificação de 13 áreas classificadas como Monumentos Naturais. Neste território, aspirante a geoparque mundial UNESCO, é preservada a herança geológica que comprova que um dia Portugal já fez parte do Hemisfério Sul ou foi banhado por um oceano que já não existe.
