Foodlotse checks what's promised on the packaging and compares it to the information printed next to it. "High Protein" on a bar that gets only 17 percent of its calories from protein. "No added sugar" on a package containing 45 grams of sugar from date paste. "Whole Grain" on a package where white flour is listed first. Foodlotse finds these kinds of cases and explains what's behind them in a single sentence. HOW IT WORKS Scan the barcode, and you'll see the rating, each finding in plain text, and the nutritional values per 100 grams and per serving. If a product isn't in the database, you can take a picture of the nutrition facts table. Foodlotse reads it directly on your device. A SHOPPING LIST THAT THINKS FOR YOU Scanned products are added to the list; you type in any items you want to add. The sorting is done by department in the order you walk through the store, so you don't have to cross the entire market three times. If you visit multiple stores, you can switch to sorting by market. Multiple lists are possible, for example, one for the week and one for your everyday essentials. BROWSE INSTEAD OF SEARCHING Around 50 product categories with symbols, plus a search function for product or brand. You can filter by vegan, vegetarian, score, and retailer. HOW THE RATING IS CREATED The starting value is 100 points. Sugar, saturated fat, salt, and fat are compared to the thresholds of the FSA traffic light labeling system and deducted individually. Fiber and low processing levels award points. Each deduction is shown as a separate line below the display. This allows you to calculate how the score is calculated. The Nutri-Score is intentionally not used. It's voluntary, therefore it's missing for seven out of ten products, and it offsets sugar against positive points. If the necessary nutritional information is missing, Foodlotse doesn't display a rating instead of estimating one. WHAT FOODLOTSE DOESN'T DO No account, no registration, no advertising, no subscription. Your scans and lists remain on your device and are not transferred. There's no daily balance, no calorie counter, and no forbidden food lists. Foodlotse explains, it doesn't prescribe. The app only needs an internet connection for the product photos, which are loaded from Open Food Facts. Everything else, including the rating, works offline. DATA BASIS 222,891 products available in Germany from the Open Food Facts database, included in the app. The data comes from manufacturers and volunteers and is incomplete. Where information is missing, Foodlotse tells you so instead of guessing. Data from Open Food Facts, published under the Open Database License (ODbL). Foodlotse is not a substitute for nutritional advice. Whether a food is suitable for you depends on the individual, the quantity consumed, and your overall diet.
