Cribbage, dealt and counted the way it is at a kitchen table. Six cards each. Throw two to the crib, cut for the starter, peg the play out to thirty-one, then count what you kept. First to a hundred and twenty-one wins, and the game stops the moment somebody gets there. That is why the order of counting matters. EVERY POINT IS SHOWN The game doesn't hand you a number and move on. Each fifteen, pair, run and flush is called on its own, with the cards that made it lit up, and it waits for you before it goes anywhere. If you have never been quite sure where a cribbage score came from, this is where you find out. THE COMPUTER PLAYS PROPERLY Three of them, and each one thinks differently. Casual goes on folklore. Skilled weighs every lay-away against all forty-six cards that could still turn up. Sharp does that, starves your crib, and pegs defensively, which you mostly notice as it quietly stops giving you anything. TWO, THREE OR FOUR Each with its own deal: six cards each head to head, five and one straight to the crib at three, partnerships facing each other at four. Any seat can be a person or the computer, so you can pass the phone round a table or just fill the empty chairs. A curtain covers the screen while it changes hands, and the table turns so your own cards are always the ones along the bottom. THE CARDS ARE DRAWN IN CODE Every face is rendered by the app, so it stays sharp at any size, and the sounds are synthesized rather than sampled. Hands sit in a real fan and you can drag them into whatever order suits you. The app ships with no image or audio files at all. IF YOU ARE NEW TO IT There is a How to Play section covering the deal, the crib, the cut, the play and the count. Its worked examples are counted by the same engine that runs the game, so the explanation cannot drift away from what the app actually does. You can open it in the middle of a hand.
