Elastic Peloton started on a quiet trail ride. I looked up and realized I had ridden well ahead of my wife and out of sight — no cell service, no civilization in sight. I wasn't worried, but I realized I was being a bit rude. This app is my solution to that problem — and this year's 100 Day Project, a creative challenge to make something every day for one hundred days. As an engineer, my medium was software. Elastic Peloton is the result. HOW IT WORKS When you open the app, a 30-second scan listens for nearby riders over Bluetooth. Once complete, everyone running Elastic Peloton appears on a live map. Your position updates automatically as you ride. Between broadcasts, each device listens for others — and retransmits what it hears, forming an ad hoc mesh network that sometimes reaches devices the original signal could not. It isn't a perfect network, and it isn't a fast one. But it's free, requires no infrastructure, and works anywhere two devices can reach each other over Bluetooth. NO COMPROMISES. There are no corporations involved, no email address required, no subscription, and no records kept. Your handle does not need to be your real name. If it's useful, use it. If corporate overreach doesn't bother you and you're happy to pay for a subscription — that subscription app will serve you well.
