Store description excerpt

Edo Karakuri opens the back of a wooden automaton and lays its movement on your wrist. Edo-period craftsmen built clockwork from timber, brass and whalebone, without a single machined part. This is that workshop: a lacquered oak plate, a maki-e chapter ring, and a train of wheels that never stops turning. ⚙️ A MOVEMENT THAT RUNS Three wheels turn at three different rates, and neighbours turn opposite ways: the great wooden wheel at 10 o'clock sweeps slowly, a brass wheel below it runs three times faster the other way, and a small cog above the centre faster still. Nothing on this dial is a still picture of a mechanism. 🔧 THE BARREL RIDES ITS SHAFT At 2 o'clock the fusee barrel is not fixed to its bracket. It slides up and down the shaft it is mounted on, one slow stroke every few seconds, between the bracket above and the collar below. 🌸 MAKI-E AND APPLIED GOLD The chapter ring is black urushi with gold sakura and a distant Fuji laid into it. Twelve applied gold batons stand on it, doubled at twelve, each seated on the exact hour. 📅 DAY AND DATE A pocket routed into the timber under twelve carries the weekday and the date. Switch it off and the timber closes over it. ⌚ THREE DATA SLOTS, YOUR SIZE Three wells sunk into the plate beside three, six and nine, showing steps, heart rate and battery by default and changeable to other information you prefer. Choose Large, Medium, Small, or off — turning them off takes the wells away too and leaves the bare movement. 🎨 THREE TIMBER FINISHES Wiped lacquer, ebony and zelkova relight the whole plate, its wheels and its bridges together. 🪙 THREE HAND METALS Gold, misty silver and antique silver — shibuichi and oxidised silver, the alloys an Edo metalworker would have reached for. 🕐 A SWEEPING SECOND A slender second hand with a sakura counterweight sweeps the dial. Switch it off if you prefer stillness. 🌙 AMBIENT MODE Optimised for always-on display. The plate and the moving parts drop away, leaving the dial's own gold batons and the hands on black to preserve battery. 🎴 MORE FROM WABIFACE Kyoto, our free Japanese watch face: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=jp.wabiface.kyoto 🌸 ABOUT WABIFACE WabiFace is a collection of watch faces celebrating Japanese aesthetics — wabi-sabi, mono no aware, and the dignified passage of time.
