DENTAL ASSISTANT PREP: PASS YOUR CDA OR RDA CERTIFICATION EXAM The CDA exam from DANB has a 60 percent first-attempt pass rate. Candidates who fail are most often weak on tooth anatomy and numbering systems, infection control and sterilization, and dental radiography safety and technique. TOOTH NUMBERING CHART Universal Numbering System: permanent teeth 1 through 32, starting upper right third molar (1) ending lower right third molar (32). Upper arch right to left 1 through 16. Lower arch left to right 17 through 32. Primary teeth A through T. Palmer Notation System: grid with numbers 1 through 8 from midline outward. Bracket orientation shows quadrant. Primary teeth A through E. For each tooth: name, arch, quadrant, Universal number, Palmer notation, number of roots, number of cusps, and clinical notes. Interactive quiz mode included. TRAY SETUP GUIDE Eight most-tested procedure setups: basic examination (mirror, explorer, cotton pliers, gauze), composite restoration (plus placement instruments, matrix band, curing light, etch, bond), amalgam (plus carrier, condensers, burnishers, carvers, matrix), crown and bridge prep (plus high-speed handpiece, burs, retraction cord, impression materials), surgical extraction (sterile setup plus elevator, forceps, suture kit), periodontal (plus probe, scalers, curettes), denture try-in (bite registration, occlusal wax), pediatric stainless steel crown (plus crown scissors, crimping pliers, cement). INFECTION CONTROL CHECKLIST Standard precautions: PPE (gloves, mask, protective eyewear, clinical attire) for every patient contact. Single-use items: needles, anesthetic carpules, air-water tips, saliva ejectors — single patient only. Sterilization methods: steam autoclave (121 degrees C, 15 psi, 15 to 30 minutes), dry heat (170 degrees C, 60 minutes), chemical vapor, ethylene oxide (heat-sensitive). Critical instruments (penetrate tissue or bone) must be sterilized. Semi-critical (contact mucous membranes) must be sterilized or high-level disinfected. Non-critical (intact skin) require intermediate or low-level disinfection. Surface disinfection: spray, wipe, spray method.
