It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or operated by the U.S. Department of Transportation, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), or any other government agency. WHAT'S A GHOST BIKE? Ghost bikes are bicycles painted white and placed at the location where a cyclist was struck and killed. They're roadside memorials and quiet protests — visible reminders that someone's life was ended in a preventable crash, and a call for streets that work for everyone. This app helps you find these memorials, document new ones, and connect with the organizations working to make our streets safer. WHAT YOU CAN DO • Browse memorials on a map — every ghost bike that's been documented. • Optional overlay of cyclist fatality data from the federal NHTSA FARS dataset. Tap any marker for crash details. • Find advocacy groups by location, scope, and proximity. • Submit a new memorial — place a pin, add the victim's name, date, photo, and details. Your submission goes to a review queue. • Improve existing records — suggest a better photo, correct an address, fix a date. Edits are reviewed before going live. • Report content — flag inaccurate or inappropriate entries for moderator review. • After-a-Crash reference — practical checklist for what to do if you're involved in a bicycle crash. DATA SOURCES Cyclist fatality data displayed in this app is sourced from the NHTSA Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS), a public dataset published by the U.S. Department of Transportation. We reproduce this data as a public-interest visualization with attribution to the original source.
