Coil is an on-device-by-default AI agent harness for macOS. It runs open-weights language models on Apple MLX and routes every prompt to the right model — a small, fast router for quick turns, a strong worker for hard ones — while showing you exactly what it decided and why. KEY POINTS * On-device by default — no account, no telemetry, nothing sent to Silo Systems. Optional Bring Your Own Key, off unless you turn it on, can answer from your own OpenAI, Anthropic, Gemini, or OpenRouter account instead. * Pre-dispatch route review — inspect destination, model residency, route reason, bounded context counts, and proposal-only tool scope; choose a loaded eligible alternative or cancel. * Precision routing — every answer carries its receipt: model, tier, role, confidence, tokens/second. * Reviewed workspace tools — scope Read, Write, Edit, read-only bounded shell, and graph queries to one selected folder with per-run policy, exact file previews, explicit approval, cancellation, and content-safe exportable trace receipts. * Live model residency — see what is loaded, pinned, and evicted against your unified-memory budget. * Local memory — conversations distill into a searchable on-device store you can inspect, pin, and delete. * Open-weights models download once after a consent prompt, then Coil works fully offline. If your Mac cannot hold a local model, first run offers a Bring Your Own Key path that skips the download entirely. WHAT IT IS NOT * Coil is not a cloud chatbot. With Bring Your Own Key off — the default — your prompts, files, and memory never leave your Mac. When you switch it on, turns go straight from your Mac to the provider you chose, under your own key; nothing ever goes to Silo Systems. * Coil does not run unrestricted shell commands. Its workspace tools are bounded and user-reviewed. REQUIREMENTS * macOS 14+, Apple Silicon, 16 GB unified memory or more (36 GB recommended for the strong-worker tier).
