According to the Great Compassion Heart Dharani Sutra, this mantra was recited by Bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara before a gathering of Buddhas, bodhisattvas, gods and kings. Like the Om Mani Padme Hum mantra that is so popular today, the Great Compassion Mantra is a popular mantra associated with Avalokiteshvara in East Asia, and is often used for protection or purification.
