Store description excerpt

Butterfly Discover asks what you can see before it tells you what it found. Most identification apps hand you a name and no way to check it. This one gives you an answer you can test. NOTICE, GUESS, REVEAL Photograph a butterfly or a moth. Mark what you can actually see on your own photo — wings, body, markings. Up to three candidates then arrive as A, B and C with their names held back, so the only thing left to go on is the evidence. You commit to one. Only then does the match appear, together with the marks that support it, the guess you made, and the details to compare next. 1,500 SPECIES OF BUTTERFLIES AND MOTHS The catalog holds 1,500 species, listed by scientific name. Moths are not an afterthought here — they take up more of the catalog than the butterflies do. Hawk-moths, tiger moths, silk moths, underwings, loopers and carpets sit beside the swallowtails, fritillaries, blues, hairstreaks and skippers. Photo matching runs on your device without sending your photo to the developer. No user account with the developer is required. Device backups and files you choose to export or share are handled separately; see the privacy policy. A WRITTEN ENTRY FOR EVERY SPECIES All 1,500 species carry a field-guide entry written for them: visible marks, size band, body shape, habitat, photo tips, and notes on the species they are most often confused with. Alongside them sit 1,064 licensed photographs from 343 credited photographers — CC0, CC BY and CC BY-SA only, with the photographer named in the app. CHECK EACH SUGGESTION The app suggests possible matches, not a confirmed identification. It may suggest a species even when the photo shows another subject, and some suggestions may have no written guide entry. Compare visible features, try another photo when unsure, and leave the observation unidentified if the evidence does not fit. IN 45 LANGUAGES The interface and every field-guide entry are written in 45 languages. Species are listed by scientific name, with a common name where one has been verified. ALSO INSIDE • Browse — the whole 1,500-species catalog, on the device • Collection — a private log of what you have found, kept on this device • Learn — practice rounds that use the same notice-and-guess flow, including a lookalike drill Butterfly Discover helps you learn to recognise butterflies and moths. It is an identification aid for learning, and its matches can be wrong. Do not rely on it for decisions about handling wildlife. Three days of full access are included. After that, a one-time purchase keeps it.
