Store description excerpt
The Bhagavad Gita, often referred to simply as the "Gita", is a 700-verse dialogue between Lord Krishna and Arjun, set on the battlefield of Kurukshetra. It forms part of the larger epic, the Mahabharat — one of the longest and most intricate epics in the world. The Mahabharat chronicles the fierce conflict between two royal families — the righteous Pandavas and the ambitious Kauravas. On the eve of the great war, Arjun, the mighty warrior prince of the Pandavas, is overwhelmed by moral confusion and despair. Torn between duty (dharma) and emotion, he lays down his arms, unwilling to fight against his own kin. It is at this critical juncture that Lord Krishna, his charioteer and divine friend, delivers the sacred wisdom of the Bhagavad Gita. In doing so, Krishna not only dispels Arjun’s doubts but also addresses the deepest dilemmas of human life — duty, righteousness, devotion, and the path to spiritual freedom. The term Bhagavad Gita translates literally to “The Song of God” Bhagavad meaning "of God" (Bhagavan refers to the Supreme Divine Being) Gita meaning "song" Thus, it is the divine song through which God imparts eternal wisdom to humankind. The Bhagavad Gita comprises 18 chapters and 700 verses (shlokas). Each chapter is called a “Yog” — a path to spiritual realization — and addresses a specific aspect of life, philosophy, or devotion.
