The dessert was introduced to Gaziantep in 1871 by Çelebi Güllü, who had learned the recipe from a chef in Damascus. Can Vegans eat baklava? Traditional baklava is, unfortunately, not vegan. The reason for this is that a primary ingredient used is honey. However, we can easily substitute that and make this taste just like the classic, albeit with no honey flavor.
