Every figure in the app comes from the SSA's public-domain baby names data, published by the agency at: https://www.ssa.gov/oact/babynames/limits.html https://www.ssa.gov/oact/babynames/numberUSbirths.html How many other children will share this name? A ranking does not answer that. A number does. Look up a name and a year, and Baby Names by the Numbers gives you the count of babies who were given it — with the year and the source printed underneath, every time. WHAT YOU GET FOR A NAME • The count: "13,544 girls born in 2025 were named Olivia" • The rate: 7.70 per 1,000 girls born that year • The classroom figure: about one in every five classes of 25 • Thirty years of history, 1996 to 2025, charted with the peak year marked • The change against ten years ago, in plain numbers • Rank too, because it is easy to compare against other apps — but the count is the number that answers the question WHERE THE NUMBERS COME FROM Every figure comes from the U.S. Social Security Administration's national baby names data — the public-domain record of given names on Social Security card applications — published by the SSA at https://www.ssa.gov/oact/babynames/limits.html. Rates are divided by the official SSA card holder table at https://www.ssa.gov/oact/babynames/numberUSbirths.html, the same denominator the SSA divides by when it publishes its own percentages. The app names that table on screen and links straight to it, so any number you see can be checked against the source. This app is published by Stronghealth, not by the SSA, and has no connection to the agency. WHAT THE DATA LEAVES OUT, SAID OUT LOUD The SSA withholds any name given to fewer than 5 babies in a year, to protect privacy. For 2025 that is 278,404 babies — 7.75% of the total — who are in the official count but not in this data. So when a name is missing for a year, this app says "under 5" rather than "0": somewhere between 0 and 4, and the data cannot tell those apart. An app whose whole claim is that its numbers can be checked has to say what its numbers cannot show. SPELLINGS Aaliyah, Aliyah and Aliya are shown together with a combined total, and the app shows you the full list it grouped. Grouping happens only where there is a hand-checked list saying those spellings belong together. There is no sound-alike guessing, and any spelling not on a list is counted on its own.
