Store description excerpt
Avina Way is the sundial scholar's companion — an immersive simulator and reference library built for those who want to understand the ancient science of gnomonics from first principles. At the heart of the app is the Shadow Desk, an interactive sundial that teaches you to read solar time the way a trained dialler would. Set the gnomon's tilt to the day's latitude, seat true north on the dial's rim, scrub the sun bead along its diurnal arc, and call the apparent hour. Then apply the equation of time to reconcile solar noon with clock time. The app grades your reading against real astronomical calculations — a precise error in seconds, a mastery rating, and a dated cast to file in your personal vault. Beyond the Shadow Desk, Avina Way is a complete reference library. Browse the Dial Register — a catalogue of fifty sundial entries spanning horizontal, vertical, analemmatic, and equatorial types, each with its history, geometry, and reading method. Work through fifteen sequential lessons in the Dialling School, each grounded in the same solar mathematics that governs the simulator. Consult the Almanac Sheet for today's equation-of-time offset, an interactive analemma plate, and hour-line geometry at six preset latitudes. Save reference photos and notes to your casts, and share illustrated cast cards from the Shadow Desk to mark a reading you are proud of. Avina Way is designed for the curious reader who takes the history of science seriously. The interface is cast in the mould of an eighteenth-century engraver's almanac — four hand-tuned colour themes, a consistent serif type system, bespoke cartouche headers, and canvas dial illustrations that re-tint with every theme change. No approximations, no shortcuts: the solar declination and equation-of-time formulae used inside the Shadow Desk are drawn from Cooper and Spencer and yield results accurate to within seconds.
