Store description excerpt
Allegra teaches Sursilvan, the most widely spoken of the five written standards of Romansh — Switzerland's fourth national language, spoken by around 40,000 people in a single canton. Not Rumantsch Grischun. Not a blend of the valleys. One written standard, taught properly. EVERY WORD IS CHECKED The course teaches 1,537 words, and every one is a headword in the Pledari Grond, the dictionary of the Lia Rumantscha. A learner cannot tell a correct word from a plausible one, so Allegra does not print Romansh it cannot check. In 2026 the whole course was checked a second time against half a million words of Sursilvan schoolbooks, and hundreds of corrections came out of it. THE COURSE • 85 lessons across 17 chapters — basics, numbers, daily life, travel, food, family, nature, Swiss culture, verbs, grammar, shopping, health, work, education and more • 24 dialogues: the restaurant, the train, the doctor, the ski slope, a job interview, a village feast • 1,537 example sentences, one for every word, each one containing the word it teaches • Flashcards on a spaced-repetition schedule, so a word comes back when you are about to lose it • Quizzes drawn from your own vocabulary rather than a fixed bank A DICTIONARY, NOT ONLY A COURSE Every word Allegra teaches is searchable — in Romansh, English, German, Italian or French. «Hütte» and «capanna» both find camona. Each entry says which lesson taught it, and the whole thing reads A to Z. IN YOUR LANGUAGE Every Romansh word is explained in English, German, Italian or French — and so is everything the app writes around it: lesson subtitles, chapter names, grammar rules, culture notes. The Romansh stays Romansh, which is the point. THE LANGUAGE ITSELF A section on Romansh as it actually is: the five idioms side by side, one word written four ways; the Latin still visible in everyday vocabulary, where panem became paun and manum became maun; a timeline from Rome taking Raetia in 15 BC to a canton that prints everything three times; and a word of the day with a month of archive behind it. BUILT LIKE A BOOK Serif headwords, generous margins, light and dark. No streaks you cannot switch off, no badges, no notifications begging you back. PRIVATE BY DEFAULT The course works entirely offline. No account, no sign-in, no analytics, no third-party SDKs. Your progress never leaves your device. FREE TO TRY The Basics chapter and the first two dialogues are free — enough to judge the course by. Premium opens all 85 lessons, all 24 dialogues and the full deck.
